“The Basics of Writing-To-Publish:
Selling Your Book-and Article Ideas to Editors”
In this seminar, we will teach you how to sell your ideas to book and magazine editors, and get published in both Christian and secular markets! Denise George, author of 25 books, will teach three, one-hour seminars on getting your books published. Carolyn Tomlin, author of more than 3600 magazine articles, will teach three, one-hour seminars on getting your articles published in magazines. Participants can choose any three of the workshops they with to attend.

Seminar 1: “Understanding Book-Publishing in Today’s Market” (Denise George) (The book publishing market has changed drastically in the past few years. In this one-hour seminar, Denise George will answer the questions: “What’s happening in today’s book publishing market?” “What type of book ideas are publishers hoping to receive?” “How can I find good book ideas, and how do I know they are good ideas?” “What is the difference between self-publishing book companies and traditional book publishers?” “What are the advantages and disadvantages of self-publishing?”)
Seminar 2: “Getting Started in the Magazine Market” (Carolyn Tomlin) Carolyn will answer these questions: “How do I get started writing for magazines?” “How can I make my time count?” “Why can I use writing to inform, educate, inspire and entertain readers?” “How and where can I find ideas?” “What are some common hindrances to writing?” “How can I use my God-given creativity to generate article ideas?” “Can I use my ‘reason to write’ as a ministry?” These ideas work. Personally, I have published over 3,600 magazine articles and worked with hundreds of editors.

Seminar 3: “I’ve Got a Great Book Idea—Now What Do I Do?” (Denise George) This seminar will address these questions: “What is the difference between a fiction book and a non-fiction book?” “How do I find a book publisher who will be interested in my idea?” “Do I need a book agent?” “What is a book contract? Royalties? Advance royalties?” “How much money can I make as an author?” “How do I approach a book editor with my fiction book idea?”
Seminar 4: “The Magazine Market: Tools of the Trade” (Carolyn Tomlin) This seminar will focus on over 3,500 secular and 1,200 Christian magazine markets that need writers to fill their pages. New markets appear each year and many companies are going to online publications. Carolyn Tomlin will discuss: “Exploring the Christian and secular writing markets, explain common symbols and basic information.” “What are the steps to publishing in these markets?” “Do photos make a difference?” “Query Letters: Catching an editor’s attention.” Let me help you learn the basics of writing for magazines and realize the passion of putting words on paper while getting paid.

Seminar 5: “How to Write a First-Class, Non-Fiction Book Proposal—That Sells!” (Denise George)
Learn how to capture an editor’s attention, and sell him/her on your book idea! Denise George shows you the professional way to approach an editor with your non-fiction book idea, and how to put together a fantastic non-fiction book proposal sales-package. “It works! Seminar 6: “How to Identify Your Audience—Knowing the Magazine!” (Carolyn Tomlin)
